Activities of Faculty and Students of Department of Social Work:::

The faculty of the department are actively involved in public policy research. With the support of the Save the Children Sweden (Regional Office) an Annotated bibliography on Children Rights was prepared with a special focus on South Asia Region.(December 2006)
• Another research study titled Children Rights and Disasters was also published.(December 2006)
• Students and Faculty participated in the inauguration program of publishing A training manual for Social Workers under the aegis of St.Xavier's College of Social Work supported by Central Child Welfare Board. (September 2006)

• The course on Child Rights was undertaken opening it to all NGO workers and other interested stakeholders who were awarded certificates. (January-May 2007)

• Students of Classic College, Kathmandu were imparted a short refresher course in Integrated Social Work for a period of a month.(April2007)

• Two of the students attended a work shop on "HUMAN RIGHTS" organized by Youth Action Nepal and gained insight on various issues.(March2007)

• PEACE CHILD INTERNATIONAL awarded the college a certificate for its contribution to the production of Peace Child International publication of water Rights and Wrongs, a young people's summary of the United Nations Development Report 2006:Beyond Scarcity: Power, Poverty and the Global Water Crisis.(March 2007)

• As a active member of The International Coalition for the Prevention of Child Abuse the students and faculty of the college participated in the activities organised on November 19th..This was organized as a part of a competition held by WWSF.(November2006)

• Students worked on initiating libraries in various jails in Nepal. With the help of the organization called Victim support and Rehabilitation center they submitted proposals to several publishers, requesting them for books. With the help provided by Victim Support and Rehabilitation Center libraries in different jails of Nepal like Kathmandu,Pokhra,Baglung,Damauli,Gorkha,Nepalgunj etc were initiated.

• Students participated in second Saath event 2007 and actively involved as working committee members. All members of working committee searched for sponsors, publicized the event, took charge of volunteers of the program, managed venue and were able to collect fund for providing education to children from socially backward families. The main objective of the event was to sensitize the youth on social issues and to collect fund from the event. Being active participants of the event, the students learnt to work in a group, co-ordinate the program and to collect funds for social issues.(January 2007)

• A team of four members consisting of two faculty and two students went on an explorative visit to Mahakali for a week. The objectives behind the visit were to work with children and youth from the area and get their perspective on Water which was a part of field work for Book Project on Human Development Report(.November2006)

• Faculty and Students actively participated in a two day National seminar titled “ Transition and Peace Building in Nepal: Opportunities and Challenges, jointly organsied by the St.Xavier’s College of Social Work and Department of Social Work, Kadambari College of Science and Management.(June 4-5 ,2007)

• Sandra Scarth a Social Worker of Choices Adoption and Counselling Services an agency based in Canada visited the college to further discussions on issues related to the role of social workers with regard to inter country adoption in Nepal.(June 22 ,2007)

• Bala Raju Nikku visited Tansen, Palpa district to vist St.Capitanio School and conducted discussions with local NGOs .(June25-27,2007)

• Students and Faculty participated in a popular Lecture by Prof. E.Sridharan on electoral systems, supported by international IDEA Nepal office.(June28,2007)

• Students and Faculty organized a farewell program for Fr.P.T. Augustine, S.J on the occasion of his completing the six year term as principal, St.Xavier’s College and leaving for India.(June 29,2007)

• Bala Raju Nikku participated in one day review meeting on strengthening Juvenile Justice System in Nepal, conducted by CCWB.(June 29,2007)


• Pranita Bhushan Particiapted in a national seminar titled Restructuring the Nepali State, organsied by NCCS, Kathmandu.(June30,2007)

• Bala Raju Nikku participated in a e-learning training jointly organsied by St.Xavier’s College and ADB.(May 7-11,2007)

• Bala Raju Nikku presented a paper titled “ World Bank and Irrigation Reforms: Case of Andhra Pradesh, at 3rd Doctoral Workshop on the World Bank and attended Annual Bank Conference on Development Economics ( ABCDE), Bled, Slovenia.(May15-18,2007)

• Bala Raju Nikku represented the department and conducted discussions with Faculty and Students of Faculty of Social Work at University of Ljubliana(May 19-22,2007)

• Roshan Thapa, adjunct faculty delivered a lecture on Social Work Education in Nepal along with Kosh Raj Neupane at Research Series discussions, Martin Chautari.(April 15,2007)

• Bala Raju Nikku, visited Purvnchal University, Birat Nagar office to discuss academic issues with the University officials, also conducted discussions with the local NGOs about social work student placements.(April 15-17,2007)

• Pranita Udas and Bala Raju Nikku had discussion with Dr. Amrita Regmi Ph.D.,MBA IRD, country representative for Nepal.(April19,2007)

• Amita Kaushik and Bala Raju Nikku presented a concept paper for strengthening Child Rights programe in Nepal at SCS office.(April24,2007)

• Bala Raju Nikku, participated in an International children’s day program to mark the occasion of inauguration of first Juvenile Bench in Lalitpur District organsied by CCWB, Kathmandu.

• Faculty and Students organized and participated in Aids Awareness activities conducted at Ghanata Ghar and V-Day function organized by Help Nepal.

• Bala Raju Nikku participated in the celebrations of Law and Water Governance group, Wageningen University.

• Bala Raju Nikku, successfully defended his PhD thesis titled ‘The politics of Policy: Participatory Irrigation Management programe in Andhra Pradesh, at Aula, Wageningen University, the Netherlands.

• BSW students of first and second year presented field work learning at Public Information Centre of World Bank, Kamaladi, Kathmandu

• Students participated in meeting organsied by Youth Action/ Nepal youth social forums anti drugs etc NAP.
